ANOTHER RESTAURANT MAY CLOSE DOWN
The Greek proprietor of a AVellington city cafe is due to go into camp, and there is a possibility of his business, wliich serves 3000 meals a week, largely to servicemen at the weekend, having to close down. This man is 35, a»na.turalize<l British citizen and married with two children. Inquiries made show that he was given a postponement of service, and when this expired, his further appeal was dismissed, conditional on his not being called' up for a period in which he could take steps to sell or have a manager installed. He did not succeed, and now awaits notice to proceed to camp. He has an active partner as chef, but as this man does not read or write, he cannot take over the general management of the business, which includes ‘buying and other outside negotiations. ■ ... The loss of such a business in the centre of the city, if it comes about, will aggravate the present -position concerning the supply of meals to servicemen and the public. It is stated that men who would normally be available to take over such a business are either in the services, directed into other essential work or, being over military age, have their own concerns.
