Too Much For The Duce

LONDON, October 4. Marshal Badoglio in an interview said that the fact that Signor Mussolini was intimidated by Herr Hitler at the meeting of the dictators on July 19 was almost certainly a contributory cause of Mussolini’s downfall. Mussolini originally intended to state plainly that Italy was no longer in a fit condition to continue the war, but Hitler did not allow him to speak and stormed for two hours. By the end ot the tirade Mussolini’s courage evaporated, and he said nothing. The knowledge that this had happened undoubtedly precipitated the attack on him at the meeting of the Fascist Grand Council. ■ . “The general feeling in Italy against Fascism was so intense that it needed only the single act of getting rid of Mussolini to bring tlie whole structure tumbling down,”-Marshal Badoglio said.
