CORSICA FREED

French Troops Enter

Bastia

LONDON, October 4

French headquarters in North Africa announce that their troops in Coi-sica. entered Bastia, the last German stronghold, this morning. The connmuniquo adds: “The liberation of Corsica is achieved.” Between Bastia and Cape Corse, the northernmost point of Corsica, lies only mountainous country. In the final effort Bastia was attacked from three sides. Motorized troops attacked from the north and Moroccans from the east and south.

A correspondent says that the Germans may still be attempting a last evacuation from the beaches round Bastia, and he adds that the beaches are virtually all the Germans hold. There is only one choice—swim or surrender. •
