Commissioner J. Evan Smith, territorial conitntiiider ot' the Salvation Army in New Zealand, accompanied by Mrs. Smith, returned to Wellington yesterday after conducting special services at Motueka. Nelson, and Blenheim. Hie commissioner also addressed tlie Rotary Club at Blenheim.
Professor Allan Nevins, Professor of American history at Columbia University, who is on his way to New Zealand as a special representative of the U. S. Office of War Information, is a noted American scliolar. fiiograplier, and historian. His university degrees include doctorate of literature and a doctorate of bl'vs. He was instructor in English at the University ot Illinois from 1912 to 1913, and later was professor of American history at. Cornell University.' fi'roin 1913 to 1923 lie was an editorial writer ini- tlie "New York Evening Post” and tor live of those veurs was also editorial writer for tlie “Nation.” For a .vein- lie was literary editor of tlie. “Now York Sun” and also on the editorial stuff of (lie “New York World” Professor Nevins is the author of n iimuber of’biographical mid historical works his “Grover Cleveland —a Study in Courngc.” in 1932 winning the Pulitzer Prize for the best biography of the year.
