SECOND ATTEMPT ON SAFE
Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, October 4. A second attempt to break open the safe iu the strongroom of Smith and Brown’s furniture shop in Symonds Street was macle on Friday night. The earlier effort, which was unsuccessful, was made the previous'weekend. As on the first occasion, the burglars entered through a window at the back of the premises. The strongroom door, which was blown opeu during the first visit, had not been repaired and was not locked. Set in reinforced concrew. the safe is of a special type whieh is stated to be burglar-proof. With hacksaws and other instruments the burglars cut oft the hinges and combination fittings, and used a charge of explosive on tbe safe ' d °The attempt was unsuccessful and on Saturday morning it was found that the damage to the safe had jammed the door, which could not be opened. Nothing was taken from tbe premises.
