FAMINE IN CALCUTTA
Deaths Reach New Peak (Received October 3, 9.35 p.ni.) LONDON, October 2. Deaths from famine in Calcutta city! rose to a new daily peak of ISS on Tuesday, according to official figures, says the British United Press Delhi correspondent, but the figure reached 197 on Wednesday. A member of a Quaker ambulance unit, writing to the “Statesman,” states that the Mniapore district is threatened with depopulation. He adds: “There has not been a single morning for a fortnight in which I have not seen a heap of dead beside the road. There are not enough able-bodied men left to bury them.”
