Food Sent To Prisoners Of War In Year
Ten million food parcels Avere sent to the prisoners of Avar camps in Germany and Italy in the 12 months ending June 30, 1943. Of this number, over 6,000,000 Avere sent from the United Kingdom and the majority of the balance from Canada, Argentina, Brazil and New Zealand. Australia does not pack food parcels, but her quota is packed by the Canadian Red Gross.
The Shanghai delegate of the International Red Cross spent over 20,000 Swiss francs in July, mainly on clothing for prisoners of Avar. Foodstuffs, medicines, toilet requisites, and sports equipment were also bought for prisoners and civilian internees. The accredited agent of the British Red Cross, in consultation Avith the SAviss Consul in Bangkok, js making purchases of medical supplies for the Chulalongkorn Red Cross Hospital and also food, tobacco, soap, boots, etc., for prisoners and internees in Thailand. The internees detained in Bangkok are reported to be Avell. The International Red Cross delegate expended over 106,000 Savlss francs in June on relief for prisoners of Avar and internees in Hong Kong, and the expending agent in Singapore and the neighbouring coast spent 248,000 SAviss francs, mainly on tinned food and fats, vegetables and fruit, maize bread, toilet requisites and clothing. An additional 20,000 Swiss francs was spent on foodstuffs for prisoners of Avar.
