HOUSING CONDITIONS

Wanganui Seeks State Action Dominion Special Service, WANGANUI, September 29. Following recommendations made by its works committee, the Wanganui City Council at its monthly meeting decided to draw the attention of the Minister or Housing to the conditions existing in Wanganui ami to stress the need tog a greatly extended scheme of State bousing in the city. The works committee commented ou a report submitted 6.V Uie city engineer, Mr. L. F. Kow, ip IJoJ, when he pointed out that a housing survey showed that, many buildings were classified as being uninhabitable or beyond repair. Or. T. N. Dickson said he hoped the council would make strong, representations to the .Minister. He did not think that too much stress could be placed on the need for more housing in the city. Taken ou a population basis, the position was more acute in Wanganui than anywhere el&e in the Dominion. ,' The mayor, Mr. W. J. Kogers, said this matter would receive urgent attention. So far 219 houses bad been built in Wanganui under the State scheme, and 49 were in course of erection. He believed that hundreds more were wanted and gave an assurance that the council would do everything possible in this direction.
