SERVICES REOPEN IN TRIPOLI
Leading Jews Murdered
By Retreating Nazis
LONDON, January 27. A garrison of Scottish troops is guarding Tripoli, which is returning to normal. The British have already arranged to alleviate the food shortage. Bakeries and breweries are again working aud the Italians are offering their services freely to the British. Italian cabarets are reopening to amuse the British troops. The night before the arrival of the Eighth Army in Tripoli the Germans slaughtered leading Jews in cold blood. The Jews were packed into a ramshackle ghetto surrounded with barbed wire, on the excuse that they might be useful to the Allies, says the United Pres* correspondent in Tripoli. The remaining thousands who were locked up in the ghetto have now been released and are mingling freely with the Italian and Arab population. Work is in progress to reconstruct the port facilities. The harbour is not as badly fouled as it might be, but there is a considerable amount of destruction and damage.
