STEWART’S APPEAL DISMISSED
The appeal of H. P. Stewart, apprentice jockey, against a decision of the Auckland District Committee lias been dlsnil-sed by judges of the N.Z. Racing Conference, but a reduction made in the length of the suspension of Stewart's licence. Stewart appealed against tills decision of the Auckland District Committee given on December 28, 1942:—"That the appeal lodged by Mr. C. Gomer, stipendiary steward, against the penalty imposed by Walpa Racing Club on Stewart (fine of £5) be upheld, and Hint the penalty be increased by suspension of Stewart's jockey's licence, lor the balance of (tie current racing season. In their judgment the judges slated ilia they bad fmd before them the reports ol: ibe proceedings before the judiemi cominittee of the M’aipa Racing Cmb nni before the Auckland District Committee, they bad heard Stewart. Mr. Gomer, and counsel for flic appellant. .... , , They found Unit Stewart failed to ride his horse imt to the end of tlio nice. They did not consider Hint the cxplnhntion given by him for so doing was sultlelont to warrant removing the suspension Imposed by the Auckland District ( onimitIco as they considered him to have been guilty of a gross error of judgment, specially as he was an experienced jockey. Tliev were of the opinion, however, that the 'period of suspension imposed by the Auckland District Committee was too lengthy for such error, and they reduced the term to expire on April 30. 1943, instead of on July 31. 1943. . The judges were Messrs. J. MacFarlane Laing. 'T. B. Heath, and R. ,T. Murphy.
