Two-thirds of the civil labour force building camps fro- American troops was supplied by Britain, which also provided two-thirds of the warships and transports. and much equipment, for the African campaign. Britain had turned over to the Americans thousands of barrage balloons, anti-aircraft guns, machinetools, and convoy vessels.
