BACKERS ASTRAY AT TRENTHAM

. Rakanui Succeeds In Main Event DOURO CUP WON BY PRINCE SHAD

(By

The Watcher.)

Trantham, that graveyard of punters, fully lived up to its reputation on Saturday, the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Clubs summer meeting. Only one well-backed horse, Glenfalloeh, was able to m in, 11 nd most of the winners paid over, or near, double figures, while one, John Gttj, returned over a third of a century. There were also many good prices paid by placed horses. It was a hard day. At the same time it could not be said that form was altogether astray. The difficulty Jay in the fact that the fields contained so many possibilities that it was easy to select the wrong one.

The principal event, the Racing Club Handicap, was won by a fresh horse, Rakanui, from the topweight Royal Laneer. .Most people would have been pleased to see the topweight successful after "his sterling races here, hut there is no doubt hi} is feeling the effects of racing under weight, and Rakanui's turn was due. John Gay brought off a big surprlse.il) the .Metropolitan Handicap, and the Douro Cup saw Prince Shad defeat the favourites Royal Merit and Klatcre Maati. .Further records'were established on the totalizator. The Douro Cup pool of £28,201 /W- is a fresh record for a single race, and the day's total was also another high mark, reaching £172.781 (win £65.544 30/-; place £103.236/10/-). With the first day’s total of £140.080 this made £3IS.SI>I for the meeting, compared witli £177,95.) for the two days last January, an increase of £140.922. „ , The weather was tine with a fresh northerly to temper the heat, ami the going was fast. There was a tremendous crowd pre-sent.-even for the first race, which many Wellington patrons missed through the railway accident. On account of this, and the inability-of the public to get to the course on scheduled time, the club postponed the timetable by one hour. The inquiry into the interference in the Telegraph Handicap the first day to MTiackle and other runners was conducted. The evidence did not disclose any foul-or careless riding, and tlie happening was proved to lie accidental. On Saturday, in the first race, Royal .Melton fell 1 and threw his rider J. Hayes on to the rail. He escaped with concussion. The inquiry was adjourned till Hayes is available to give, evidence, but so far as it Ims progressed the evidence is all for an “accidental” verdiet. In the second race, the Trial Plate, Transcript fell, and rider J. Garth was severely bruised. It was due to horses inside him moving out as he ran alongside, and the happening was purely accidental. Just, on the start of the Racing Club. Handicap, Ttilcrc tried to duck through the barrier and, on being checked, he throw his rider, N, Holland, out 'of his seat. One foot caught in the stirrup, apd the .leg, was wrenched so severely that Holland received a compound fracture Just above the ankle. A. (.’. Messervy was substituted at .31b. overweight, and the horse took ills place in the field. A feature of the day's racing was lite success of Mr. G. M. Currie. He won three races, with Stairway, Rink and Screen, all trained by G. M’. New at Awapunl, Rink and Screen being ridden by W. J. Broughton. How They Ran. Stairway, a good fifth in the High weight the first day, showed the necessary improvement to,score a decisive win in Saturday’s event. Nightglass put in some good work over the last half, but was unable to reach the winner, though she defeated Gunga Bin, who rau a good race all the way. Stvlosa was fourth, after being dangerous right to tlie distance. None of the others had any chance, and Pastmaster ran even worse that lie did the first day. There was a great .finish to tlie Trial Plate, Snowman getting up on the post to nose Hippodrome out of tlie prize. These two horses finished much too strongly for the field, Spirit always prominent, staying a little better for third titan Silver Mask, who threatened all the way, but weakened. The favourite, Flying Ace, was never sighted. There was a mild transformation in form in the open mile, when Rink rim home an easy winner from Good Scout, who was filling second place for the fifth successive time. Good Scout was sore, and took time to get going. Daljarrock Just beat Dinah Dltu for tlie minor placing, ' while Botany and Dominate came home verv fast close up from the rear of tlie field. Ivar looked likely entering tlie straight, but like tlie other topweights, was well out of it at Hie finish. There was another keen finish to the hack seven, Glenfalloeh Just getting up from the first day's winner Sir Bradbury. It was a solid effort for Glenfalloeh. as he drew 15 at tlie post, but at the same time it looked as if Sir Bradbury was unlucky to have it snatched from him. Still that is what vigorous riding will do at a pinch. Te Awe Awe finished strongly into a moderate third. Just heading Lady Nutfield, who put In a strong run from a long way back. Duncroon found the journey too far. , , , Wellington Cup form worked out well in the Racing Club Handicap, but they all had to give in to a fresh runner in Rakanui, who moved up handy entering the straight after Sir Crusoe had carted them along at a solid pace, and Rakanui ran on Just too well for Royal Lancer in a good finish. Royal Lancer was always handv, and put up another fine race, but he just lacked the sting of his earlier races. Lou Rosa, well back in the running, finished strongly at tlie right end, but while he reversed places with r °aola, he never looked like reaching the pair in front. Battledress went another fair race for fifth, but the others had no chance. Screen, whose season’s activities have been severely restricted through soreness, improved with her race the first day to win the Nursery all the way. She slave witli the-field till the straight, aitci the drew away to score decisive!?. rirftt 111 finished a little bettor than Supercharged for second, and her effort was a good one, as she and Virtuoso collided at thi star. Harras was only fourth after bavin,, ocrj Ch .lohn Gav took charge entering the straight In'the Metropolitan Handicap from Fur Coat, and ran on well to score from the fast-finlshlng Duncannon, who beat Fur Coat, but was unable to get to the winner. Duncannon got a bail passage earlv. or-lie would probably have won. Poutatau. always bandy, looked dangerous right to wit bin 103 yards of the post, an 1 then weakened Io fourth. Palora was next and she was definitely another unlucky runner.'as she got very badly away. Hittwo topweights ■worn well beaten. The three topweiglits outclassed the hud in tlie Douro Cup, though they finished tn reverse order to weights and betting. Roval Merit, favourite. jumped away smiirtlv from No.. 1 nt the post it nd endeavoured to lead all tlie way. I liken on. bv Kiatere Maati in the running. lie was able to' liold him off, but. ho had notl>-

ing left, after a fast pace to stall off thestrong late run by Prince Shad. The winner's effort was a good one, as be was a fair wav back at the three, but lie stuck to the fence and came through very well. Tlieolateral beat all tlie .others.
