ADVENTUROUS FIRST FLIGHT
N.Z. Bomber Captain LONDON, January 21. “I considered this a shade steep for my first trip as captain,” was the comment of Sergeant Pilot Raymond Frederick Bennett, R.N.Z.A.F., of Otahuhu. in the log book of his first mine-laying flight in a Stirling bomber, during which he fought off a Messerschmitt 110 and two Junkers 88’s in the course of half-gu-hour. Bennett, after the first duel with the Messerschmitt, went on and dropped, mines. The Stirling, beginning its return flight passed over flakships which subjected it to heavy fire. Then two Junkers began weaving round the Stirling, each acting as decoy for the other. “At this stage we were almost at sea-level,” said Bennett, "and must have been silhouetted against the reflection of the moon. Me were a sitting bird for the enemy, but the luck was on our side. A thick layer of cloud appeared and protected us. Me then shook off the fighters.
