ANTHRACITE STRIKE
(Received January 21, 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 20. President Roosevelt lias directed that al llhe striking anthracite coal-miners return to work immediately. He intimated that, if they failed Io comply within 48 hours lhe Government would take the nc; cessary steps to protect the security of the nation against the strike, which wits doing serious injury to the war effort. Meanwhile, 5000 of the miners, anticipating tlie President's order, have returned to work. About. 12,0(10 are still idle. One union official declared that the men will not work under the Army and will not work under Mr. John L. Lewis, president of lhe Mine-Morkers’ Union, but they are willing that the Government fake over management of the mines lor the duration of the war. They feel lint if the Governinent does this and thoroughly investigates conditions, they will get a square deal. The miners are demanding increased pay of two dollars it day nnd cancellation of the 50 cents u month increase in union dues.
