LATE MR. ARMSTRONG

Arrangements For Funeral Flags were flown at half-mast on. Government buildings yesterday as a mark of respect to the late (Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Public Works, who died in Wellington on Sunday night. Those who paid tributes to the memory of Mr. Armstrong included the Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr. Sullivan, the Minister of Labour, Mr. Webb, the Minister of Railways, Mr. Semple, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Holland. The following telegram has been received by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, from Mr. Holland: “On behalf of the Parliamentary Opposition, and the National Party organization I desire to extend the sympathy of our members in the passing of the Hon. 11. T. Armstrong. By his devotion to the cause he served and by his honesty of purpose in that service Mr. Armstrong won the esteem and goodwill of political friend and foe. alike, and on personal grounds he had a circle of friends far wider than his immediate political supporters. He leaves behind him a lifetime of service and a record of accomplishment that should ibe an inspiration to those who come after. The National Party is honoured to pay tribute to one whose memory will be so’universally respected.”’ Arrangements for the funeral of Mr. Armstrong were announced last night by the Minister of Internal Affairs, . Mr. Parry. Solemn Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Angels, Boulcott Street, at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow. The casket will be carried into the church by prominent figures in the Labour movement. The celebrant will be the Rt. Rev. Monsignor T. F. Connolly. At the conclusion of the Requiem Mass the casket will remain in St. Mary, of the Angels and members of the public who wish to show their respect will, till 2 p.m., have an opportunity to do so. . The funeral procession, which will be on foot, will leave iSt. Mary’s at 2.30 p.m. The casket will be borne out of the church by six of the late Mr. Armstrong’s Ministerial colleagues. . . The procession will proceed via Willis Street, Lambton Quay and Bunny Street to the point of destination in Waterloo Quay. A Solemn Requiem Mass, will be held in Christchurch at the Catholic Cathedral, Barbadoes Street, at 10 a.m. on Thursday. The celebrant will be the Roman 'Catholic Bislfop of Christchurch, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Brodie. The interment will take place at. Bromley Cemetery, ami tlie funeral procession will start at 2.30 p.m. It is anticipated that all members of the Government will attend the funeral in Christchurch. The Mass in Wellington ami in Christchurch will be broadcast.
