NELSON FRUIT CROP
Season’s Prospects
In Nelson apple orchards, it is reported, there has been heavy blossoming and the prospects are bright for a good setting of fruit in all varieties except Golden Delicious. Bears are a little tin- 1 certain yet, but a normal crop is expected. , Because of shortage of labour and contractors some of* the orchards, specially on the Montero Hills, are in a backward state of cultivation. This may adversely affect the size of fruit. There has been a reduction in acreage in orchard this year, but with few exceptions the orchards cut out arc those which have been deteriorating for some time and the acreage removed will not represent a great loss' in production. Prospects for small fruit are hopeful, though the strawberry crop will be determined by the weather from now on. Raspberry canes are looking well and gooseberries have set well. The planting of outdoor tomatoes is still proceeding. Tbe first of the tomatoes grown in glasshouses are expected to be ready for picking in a few days.
