REFERRED BACK

Clothing Trades Dispute

An application by the New Zealand Federated Clothing Trades Employees' Industrial Association of Workers for a new Dominion award covering clothing trade workers, came before the Court of Arbitration in Wellington yesterday, and was referred back to the conciliation council. When the case was called, Mr. Justice Tyndall said he ha<l perused the papers and had noticed that in the main dispute 13 classes out of 27 had remained unsettled. As some of the clauses settled were Court clauses, this meant that twothirds of the clauses had hot been settler!, which was too high a proportion. “I feel,” said his Honour, “that I should not allow the case to proceed without asking the advocates if it is not possible to get together again in an endeavour to arrive at an improvement, in the dispute.” Mr. J. Roberts (Christchurch), advocate for the applicant union, said he had no objection to another attempt being made to arrive at a settlement. Mr. 11. J. Rutland, advocate for the employers, that the parties had been close to a settlement, but a deadlock had arisen on a major clause, and this had resulted in several clauses being referred to the Court which might have been settled.

After an adjournment, it was agreed that the parties should meet, in conciliation council in 'Wellington on November 16, and that the case should be heard the following day.'
