CLUBMEN AT GOLF

Central Win Lauchlan Cup For Third Time The eleventh competition for the Lauchlan Cup, a golf event ' in which teams of four from the social clubs of Wellington compete on handicap, was played on the Miramar club's links yesterday afternoon. The weather conditions could not have been much worse, as a strong southerly wind was blowing, and the temperature was so cold that players had difficulty in getting a proper feel of their clubs. The competition resulted in a win for the Central Club, whose net aggregate’ of 296 was 17 strokes better than that of the runners-up, the Wellington Commercial Travellers’ Club team. Central -won the competition in 1930, the first year it was played for, and took the cup again in 1932, so yesterday was their third win. ,

E. Williams, of the Commercial Travellers’ Club team, did' the best gross round of the afternoon, 82, and bis handicap of 12 enabled him to record the best n’et round, 70. . There was a large attendance in the social hall after the contest, when Mr. A. E. Jlabin, president of the Miramar Golf Club, asked those present to stand as a mark of respect to the memory ■, of the donor of the cup, Mr. J. B. Lauchlan, who had died during the year. The Lauchlan family, he said, had been most unfortunate, as Mr. W. Lauchlan, son of Mr. 'J. B. Lauehlan. has been killed on active service. On the motion of Mr. E. E. Brooking, it was decided to send a letter to Mrs. J. B. Lauchlan expressing the players’ deen sympathy in the losses she had suffered, and telling her how much the club members appreciated Mr. Lauchlan’s gesture in bringing them, together annually.
