Monte Cristo, who Is In the Stewards Handicap, dead-heated at Te Rapa on Labour Day, but prior to that he had not raced since he finished third, with 8.13 in a division of the York Handicap at Lllerslle in June, 1940, glvlng 2<lb. to the winner. Trotting Cup Favourite. t „ Josedale Grattan, favourite for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, has arrived at New Brighton. He Is In excellent condition. Though he has not been seen in any speed trials, he is tit and looks capable of repeating his performance at the New Zea land Metropolitan Trotting Club’s spring meeting lust vear when he won the Nett Zealand Trotting Cup, the New demand Sprint Championship, and ran third to Gold Bar and Springfield Globe in the Ollivler Handicap in the fast time of 3.20 2-5 for one mile and five furlongs.
Consistent Horse. Not many horses can claim such consistent form aft Rakanui, a six-year-old golding by Hunting Song from Golden Opportunity, a half-sister to Gold. Rod, a bljfhclass performer in Australia. Rakanui had four starts at three years, .with one win, while at four years he won six times in 15 starts. Last season he ran 11 times for two wins, in the spring the Higgle Handicap at Wanganui, and the Avondale Cup. His other starts last season are worthy or mention. They were: Second In the Mitchelson Cup, with 9.0; beaten tw-o heads in third place behind Dictate and The Wrecker in the Buchanan Memorial at MOtukarara. with 9.10; unplaced in the New Zealand Cup. with B.S; third in the Canterbury Cup. two half heads behind Wardress and. Lambourn; half a head behind Gladyncv In the Metropolitan Handicap, with 9.6; second in n sprint at Woe^Y' I*®’ 1 *®’ with 8.12; second in the GothariJ Handicap, with 9.8; and second over Seven furlongs with 10.3; winding up with fourth in the Clifford Plate at Ellerslie. He started this season with a second to ißashful Lady in the -Winter Clip, carrying 10 ’ 2 i. “ bd J 11 ®? won the Islington Handicap with 10.0 At Trentham last month lie was second to Centrepoise, with 9.2. in the Wellington Handicap, and second to Kindergarten in the Harcourt Stakes. In all he has won 10 races In 36 starts, and only nine times has he been farther back than fourth.
Ellerslie Training. Some very interesting work was accomplished at Hllerslieon Tuesday in preparation for ttie Avondale Jockey' Club a second spring meeting on Saturday. The course proper, where the poles were out <wtt., provided good going. The best sprint was credited to Transcend, who ran tour furlongs in 49 1-5. Transcend worked late ■when the conditions were most favourable, yet It. .was a good effort for a horse in his class. His stablemate, Transmitter, who went before breakfast, also pleased bv running three furlongs in 36 3-;>. The tenderness that has troubled Transmitter lately was less pronounced after he pulled up Among others who worked well were Landvcyor and Bronzo, who ran a solid seven furlongs, Charivari, Nizani. lilglit On, Kraal, British Mint, Phaleron and Foxlore.
