"Assaults on prison and Borstal institution officers have increased.” eoinincn;ed Mr. Justice Kennedy iu the Supreme Court when sentencing Peter Lawrence Samson, an inmate of I lie Invercargill Borstal Institution, to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour. Samson was charged with assaulting a warder so as to cause actual bodily harm. “You planned to escape by assaulting the wai’der in charge.” said his Honour, addressing the prisoner. “The. vtheers skull was fractured mid it was fortunate for you that lie did not succumb. I think the circumstances enjoin me io impose the full penalty.” The sentence was made eoiieurvent with a term of live years’ detention the prisoner is already’ serving. He ".is ordered to be transferred to prison.
