DECISIVE WIN FOR REPUBLICANS Result In America

PROBLEM SET FOR ADMINISTRATION (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Cop; right.i (Received November 5, 1.40 a.m.p WASHINGTON, November 4. Though the election returns are incomplete it. is clear that the general result is what the “New York Tinies” terms a decisive Republican victory. So far the returns show : — House of Representatives:—Democrats elected, 138, compared with 201 in the present Congress; 102 Republicans elected compared with 160: no Progressives compared with three: no Farmer-Labour candidates, compared with one, and one American Labour Party candidate, compared with one. with 192 contests undecided. Senate: 11 Democrats elected, and 41 hold-overs; nine Republicans elected, and 20 hold-overs; no Progressives elected, one hold-over; 14 contests undecided.

The elections of new Governors in 33 States, of whom hitherto 18 were Democrats and 15 Republicans, has so far resulted in seven Democrats and 13 Republicans being elected. Thirteen contests are undecided.

A total of 946 candidates have been contesting 469 seats, 35 in the Senate and 434 in the House. The "New York Times” states the opinion that the Opposition has made the greatest gain in the mid-term elections since 1918. It adds that the Republican gains may take them beyond the 30 which experts consider to be the figure where an important reverse for the Administration can be calculated. The Democrats are probably not losing enough to change their nominal control of the House, and yet the Administration may have lost it when the final returns are in.
