LABOUR BATTALION
Manpower Suggestion Dominion Special Service AUCKLAND. November I The formation of an Army unit to la. known as a labour battalion was one of the suggestions adopted by the Auckland District Council of Primary Production as a means of helping to solve the aimpower- problems lacing essential industries. Other schemes suggested were the establishment of a labour pool from civilian ranks, the employment of secondary school hoys and fuller organization of’ the women's land services. The National Council of Primary Production submitted proposals by the New Zealand Boy Scouts’ Association for the establishment of camps of 50 boys, aged from 13 to 17. in centres adjacent to primary production areas. 'The boys would be sent out Io work in market, gardens and on similar jobs in groups of four, working a five-hour shift daily for a wage of 4/- a day, the employer to provide a meal in addition. ’1 he scheme was not suit ul le for dairy and sheepfanning. continued the letter.
