REPUBLICANS GAIN
American Elections MANY RETURNS TO COME LONDON, November 4. There have been more Republican gains at the expense of the Democrats in the elections for the United States House of Representatives With 129 results still to come in, 160 Democrats have been elected and 144 Republicans. Among the Republicans returned is Mr. Hamilton Fish (the noted isolationist), who represents President Roosevelt’s home district. Clare Booth Luce has been elected on the Republican ticket. [Clare Booth Luce and her husband, Heiirv Luce, managing-editor of “Time and “Life,” have recently become the most-discussed couple in the United States. Gifted writers, dogmatic and with a flair for publicity, Mr. and Mrs. Luce are seldom out of the news. . It was “Life” which recently suggested that Britain was trying to save her Empire at the expense of her allies. Mrs. Luce wrote “The Women,” the much-discussed nlay, which was seen in New Zealand a few years ago. During her election campaign, the conservative “New York Times” devoted a full page to one of her addresses.] Senator Norris, after 30 years in Congress, has been defeated.
