DISORDERLY GIRLS
Six Sent To Borstal
1 Four young women who were convicted in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, on Monday of being idle- and disorderly in that they had insufficient lawful means of support, and who were remanded till yesterday for sentence, and two additional young women convicted yesterday <m a similar charge, were sent by Mr. Stout, S.M., to the-Borstal Institution. Monica Mary Hansen, housemaid, aged 17, Anne Itosemond, waitress, aged 19, and Marjory Evaline Swinburne, factory hand, aged .19, who had been remanded, were committed to the Borstal for 12 months. Tite other girl who had been remanded, Kathleen Mavis McGregor, machinist, aged 21. was ordered to be detained for 18 months.
Gwendoline Reay Harris, ammunition worker, aged 22. denied the charge- of being idle and disorderly. Police witnesses said she did not appear to work and lived at a .house in Willis Street of bad repute which had been declared out of bounds to overseas servicemen. “The house is regarded by us at Mount Cook as a siuk of moral iniquity.” said Sergeant J. C. Fletcher. “They have parties there and the house is a pest to the flats next door and the house next door,” /Accused blamed' the selling of liquor by other occupants of the house for the disorders. The magistrate: “Eor your own protection we will put you away with the others for 12. months.” .. Betty Joan Brownlees, dressmaker, aged 22, who admitted the charge, was sent to the Borstal for 18 months..
