NO EXTRA TAXI LICENCE FOR PAEKAKARIKI

An application for an extra taxi licence for Faekakanki was heard by tho Transport Licensing Authority, Mr .1. Skoglund, in Wellington yesterday. Counsel for the applicant contended that I'aoknkariki was particularly ill-served with only one taxi licence, as the present holder had other interests, and was not always available. Few trains were met, and many people had up to u mile and a half to travel from tha station, which wap a terminus for many trains. The population varied from about 800 in thg winter to 1200 in the suuinier months. Mr. 8. Tansley supported the application, stating that he thought there was a definite need for another taxi licence in Puekakariki. Mr. Skoglund asked, if a man. could make a living by driving a taxi tn lackakariki without auy other employment. Mr. Tansley thought that was highly improbable. t . Mr. Skoglund said that was the test of the whole matter.- In normal times the issue of licences',Xqr. taxis was based ou one per 1000 of population, and even then Faekaknraki did-not measure tip. People would simply have to go without taxis and other conveniences tor transport. Tho application would not be granted.
