RICCARTON NOTES
Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, October 30. Thirty-four, horses were entered for the New Zealand Cup and 10 dropped out at the first acceptance. Today only Regal Fox disappeared from the lot handicapped above 8.0, and he will not be at the meeting. Sallv Lunn and Lambourn were the only others whose presence might have been welcomed, and they have been nominated for the second day. -Six of the uonacceptors were on the minimum. The five horses at the top of the list still, head the Heid which included plenty of staying prospects. Riccarton stables have five representatives. The three-year-old eolt. Representative, was sent on to Riccarton this week after racing at Trentliam. He will be got ready for the Derby, which is bis only engagement at the Canterbury Jockey Club s was taken to the Riccarton trucks this morning and was given light exercise. She lias made a good recovery from the injuries she -received m her fall at Washdyke. Apparently these were only muscular. As she has done no serious work for a fortnight she is backward, so there was no surprise when she was allowed to forfeit her New Zealand Cup engagement. She has 'been nominated for the Canterbury Cup and Metropolitan Handicap on the second day, and she will have an extra week to get ready.
Back to the Saddle. D. Lamb, formerly a successful jockey who served his apprenticeship with B. Burgess, at Opaki, has reapplied for, and been granted, a jockey’s licence.
Shifting Quarters. Mr. W. Payne, the owner of All Night, has bought a property at Sockburn, and he will train his horses there. In addition to All Night ho has a two-year-old colt, which he purchased recently. He is by Night Raid from a mare by Clarenceaux from Chakwana. a- mare owned by Messrs. Vivian and Eric Riddiford who won the Members’ Handicap at Riccarton two years ixl succession. Representative at Riccarton. Represfentfitive, a Derby candidate, is the first of the North Island horses to arrive for the New Zealand Cup meeting.
Delay at Cambridge. It w’as fully an hour after the advertised starting time when the last event was started at the Waikato Hunt races at Cambridge on Monday, and complaints were heard on all sides about the delay, specially from those who had to make the return trip to Auckland by train (reports the “New Zealand Herald”). The fact that two races had to be divided and that four horses were involved in a fall in one caused some loss -of time, but the hour of concluding was altogether .too late. The facilities and appointments at Cambridge are scarcely adequate for handling such fields' and a crowd, like that on Monday, and many racing men would like to see the meeting transferred to- Te Rapa, • where there is- a better course and far more room. Till such time as improvements are made at Cambridge a change of venue might be in the best interests of all. A There will be no galloping fixture in New Zealand today. The. only racing will be the Invercargill Trotting Club s meeting, and the second day of the postponed meeting of the Greymouth Trotting Club. Answers to Correspondents.
