Mr. W. R. Newall Honoured
Officers of the G.P.0., Wellington, yesterday farewelled Mr. W. R. Newall, deputy-director-general of the P. and T. Department, who is retiring after 41 years’ service. The DirectorGeneral, Mr. J. G. Young, referred to the fine career of Mr. Newall iu the department, particularly in the field of tele-communications. He said Mr. Newall, on graduating to the telegraph division, had applied his administrative skill to the problems of the telegraph and telephone branches. From there he had advanced to the position of deputy-director-general, and though he had now relinquished it, .the department was not losing his services, as he would carry on in an advisory capacity iu connexion with tele-communications. Officers of the service would share his regret that Mr. Newall was leaving his present position. His organizing ability, thoroughness, and capacity for getting things done were known throughout the service, and he would be. long remembered for his achievements.
Mr. Newall was presented with a radio-gramophone, and Mrs. Newall with a china cabinet, both gifts of, officers of the service throughout New Zealand. / Mt. Newall expressed deep regret that he was relinquishing his position, particularly at present, when there were so many problems arising, but he hoped to assist the war effort in an advisory capacity.
