Co-Author Of Critical Book On Prisons Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, October 30. The Anglican chaplain to the Auckland Prison, the Re,v. G. E. Moreton, has resigned that position, whicli lie has held since December, 1939. Mr.. Moreton stated that he. had nothing to say at present regarding his resignation, except that he was remaining secretary of the Auckland Discharged Prisoners* Aid Society and would continue Ills work for ex-prisoners. Mr. Moreton and a collaborator, the Rev. Melville Harcourt, vicar of Birkenhead, this month published an autobiographical book, “A Parson in Prison,” containing rather severe criticisms of the New Zealand prison system and comparisons with English penal methods as seen by Mr. Moreton on a trip abroad in 1936. Prison chaplains in New Zealand are not employed by the State, as in Britain, but are merely given facilities, as representatives of their denominations, for holding services in jail and interviewing prisoners.'
