STATE LOTTERY NOT FAVOURED
Raising Patriotic Funds
A State lottery to augment patriotic funds as suggested by the Wellington Labour Representation Committee is not favoured by the Government, according to adviee received at the last meeting of the committee from the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry. “I have come to this conclusion oy the experience of my department and myself with regard to the big gold art unions,” said the Minister. “I do not think that at the very outside a sum of more than £lO,OOO or £15,000: would be obtained by such a national art union. This split up among all the provincial councils would be only a fragment of what they themselves are already securing by way of their own art unions and raffles. Tlie only way to secure a larger sum than the £lO.OOO or £15,000 I have mentioned would be to have a very big prize list. This in itself is undesirable.” Mr. Parry added that the present system of national art unions for charitable purposes was accepted by the community, but he‘was convinced that any other art Union on a large scale with outstanding prizes would embarrass the Government by opposition front certain quarters.
