CARDINAL’S PROTEST
“Life” Article On Quebec
(Received October 29, 8.5 p.m.) QUEBEC, October 28. The Cardinal of Quebec, Archbishop Villeneuve, has issued a statement protesting against an article in “Life.” The Archbishop said he was bound to express absolute reprobation of such flagrant contempt of the laws of hospitality and the rights of justice and truth. The article in “Life” said that Quebec was philosophically and religiously derived from Catholicism of the sixteenth century. It despised France of the French Revolution. Now its youth admires the France of Marshal Petain. Inter alia, “Life” said that actually rural Quebec is run by the Catholic Church, which exacts a 4 per cent, tithe of all the grain harvests. Girls may marry at 14, but must not go to the movies till they are 16.
