N.Z. ONSLAUGHT AT RUWEISAT
New Coastal Landing? (Received October 29, 1.40 a.m.) LONDON, October 28. ' Urgent moves to rush reinforcements of men and material to FieldMarshal Rommel have already begun, according to reliable sources in Ankara. Axis sources there say that the Eighth Army’s attacks are being pushed ahead with increasing strength. In spite of Axis claims that the attacks ceased in the southern and central sectors, Vichy Radio describes fierce fighting at Ruweisat Ridge, where New Zealand and Indian troops are repeatedly attacking. The Radio also says that specially trained British infantry have landed east of Mersa Matruh, and Italian forces immediately engaged the enemy, destroying two landing craft. The announcement does not say that the landing was frustrated. Oslo Radio says defensive fighting Continued all yesterday and last night on the Alamein front, where, in spite of fierce German air attacks, the British succeeded in bringing up reinforcements.
