JUVENILE LABOUR
Fruit And Tobacco Picking (By Telegraph. —Prese Association.) NELSON, October 28. The proposal to bring secondary school girls from Wellington to assist on small fruit farms aud tobacco gardens during January and February ’ was discussed by Miss P. L. J till, girls’ vocational guidance officer, Wellington, and the Nelson provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union. Miss Jull said that the youth centre realized farmers’ difficulties. The centre was able to« find several hundred school girls for fruit picking, provided conditions were suitable. The big problem was accommodation. The Manpower Department had offered to pay fares. Miss Jull said she did not think the girls were out to make much money. They were mostly strong girls and would work well. Miss Jull is spending two days inspecting schools and halls for accommodation.
