THEFT OF WHISKY
Two Young Men Sent To Jail Barrie Grey, hotel porter, aged 2.1, and Douglas Alexander Biddiss, soldier, aged 21, who had pleaded guilty to breaking into the warehouse of Burns, Philp and Co., Ltd., Molesworth Street, ’Wellington,, on October 2, and stealing cases of whisky, came before Mr. Justice Blair in the Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday, tor sentence. Grey had pleaded guilty to stealing six cases of whisky, valued at id--18/-, and he and Biddiss had admit ted jointly stealing eight cases of whisky •valued at £57/4/- from the same warehouse on October 13 last. , His Honour said that though botn men had just passed their twenty-first birthday, both had sorry records. Grey had been convicted of breaking and entering and theft in 1937, and had had a great many convictions since. Grey had first been dealt with in the Children’s Court, and had been admonished, but it was not much use admonishing such persons. Biddiss had had two years’ probation and two years Borstal detention. It was plain that supervision had not done him much good. Grey was sentenced to three years’ reformative detention on each charge, and Biddiss to two years’ reformative detention, the terms to be concurrent.
