OBITUARY

Rev. J. P. Cowie

Anglican chaplain to the Auckland Infirmary for the last seven years, and before that for many years vicar successively of Paeroa, and Pukekohe, the Bev. J. P. Cowie, second son of the late Bishop Cowie, died suddenly at Auckland last week. He was 70 years of age. Educated at the. old Church of England Grammar School, Parnell, and for a brief time at King’s College, London, Mr. Cbwie was at sea for four years before in 1895 he commenced studies with his father. The following year he entered St. John’s College, Auckland, am l , was ordained deacon. At the beginning of 1897 he accompanied Bishop Cowie as chaplain to England on the occasion of the Lambeth Conference. He served a curacy .in London, and devoted some time to studies in Brisbane, where he was admitted to the priesthood in 1899. In the same year Mr. Cowie was appointed secretary to his father, who was then Primate, and he continued to be associated with him till the Primate’s death in 1902. For 14 years until 1916 Mr. Cowie was vicar of Paeroa, and from then till 1935 he wiis vicar of Pukekohe. He is survived by hie wife, who is the youngest daughter of the late Rev. James Marshall, and three sons. Archdeacon E. M. Cowie is a brother.
