Association Holds FortyThird Anniversary
Yesterday, the forty-third anniversary, of the departure of the first contingent of New Zealand troops for the Boer War was celebrated at a gathering in Wellington, held by the First New Zealand Mounted Rille Contingent Association. This association was formed aboard ship by these nieu on their returning to the liominion. '
The Earl of Athlone, the patron, sent a cable of congratulations on the occasion of the anniversary. Captain Roclistrow, president, welcomed the guests, who included wives and relatives ot members. The association's loving cup, originally an ordinary large enamel pannikin, held pride of place on the table. It was used by a trooper of the first contingent and is now prized for the sentimental associations it represents. Heavy silver bands, stamped with the date ot each of the '43 anniversaries, decorate the outside. People from various parts of the North and South Islands were present, including Dr. and Mrs. Bowie, Gisborne, Mr. and Mrs. J. Culling, Invercargill, Mr. and Mrs. J. Craig. Wanganui, and Mr. and Mrs. Galpin, Marton. Also present were: Mrs. Hay, daughter of the theu Prime Minister, the late Mr. Seddon, Lieutenant-Colonel White. 1).K0., DC.M., and Mrs. White. Miss Robin, sister of the late Major Robin, who was in charge of the contingent, and Colonel J. G. Hughes. C.M.G.. D.S.O. The secretary, Mr. Watson Brown, was absent through illness, Mrs. Watson Brown attending. An original poem, specially written tor the First Contingent, was given by Miss Thea Smith. Afternoon tea was served. Lovely flowers decorated the Victoria League rooms where the party was held.
