ATTEMPTED LANDING
Japanese Failure Near Hong Kong LONDON, October 15. Tonight’s Chungking communique discloses that Japanese troops attempted a landing near Hong Kong 10 days ago. The attempt was made in the region of Bias Bay, north-east of Hong Kong. The enemy withdrew after meeting with strong Chinese resistance. For the last 75 days, stated a Chinese authority iu London, the Chinese in the Chekiang and Kiangsi area have been attacking the towns of Lanchi ana Wuyi, both of which are north-west ot the key city of Kinwha, which is stdl in Japanese hands. . During the past fortnight hhe Chinese have concentrated on disrupting the Japanese communications between Kinwha and Shanghai with the object ot preventing supplies arriving from Uang'tdiow and Shanghai, and have destroyed several bridges on the Ikinwha-Laiichi highway. „ V , The Japanese are still firmly entrenched at Kinwha, but the Chinese moppingnp operations proceed incessantly. Fighting has occurred m north China, particularly in the Suiyuan area, but there is still no indication of the next Japanese move in the Chinese war theatre.
BIG JAPANESE CLAIMS
(Received October 16, 11 p.m.) LONDON, October lu. Tokio radio quoted a claim by the Domci news agency that the Japanese had dealt destructive blows to Chinese units iu Hupeh province, in a series ot punitive expeditions between October 3 and 10. About 5000 Chinese troops ot the 48th division, it stated, were scattered after a two-day battle, east <>£ Hwayuan, on the Hankow-Peking railway. A Chinese guerrilla force or 300 was annihilated 125 miles west ot Hankow. ________
