WEEKEND SITTINGS

Arrangements for extended sittings of the House of Representatives and a speed-up of the business were agreed to on the motion of the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, when the House resumed yesterday. The House is to sit this afternoon and tonight instead of adjourning for the weekend at 5.30 p.m., and sittings will 'be held on Saturday and Monday, with the intention of concluding the session by Thursday next. The difficulties in transport made it inconvenient for South Island members, said the Prime Minister, and out of consideration for them and with the object of expediting the work of the House an adjustment of the hours seemed desirable. He had consulted, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Holland, who concurred in the suggestions for sittings at the weekend. Mr. Fraser said he felt that an adjournment from next week till February would be rather long, and he considered that a short session, if only for a few days, should lie held early in December. Mr. Holland said the Opposition would be glad to work at higher pressure to complete the business in a shorter tune, but he felt that care should be taken to ensure that the business was not rushed unduly. The work should be done thoroughly, and any unfinished business next. Thursday should be left over till the later session.
