AUCKLAND, October 14,

Damage estimated, at about £lO.OOO was caused this morning at the Westfield Freezing Company’s works when lire destroyed Hie skin-drying plant which is part of the wool and slieqpskin department, adjoining the slaughtering block. A good save was made by Hie company's volunteer life brigade, in conjunction with a number of suburban brigades. , Hie manager of the company. Mr. A. G. Bryan, said tlie cause of the fire had not been discovered, but he believed it was due to a fault in the installation. The damage might have been greater had the lire occurred at the height of the season. He said production would not be held up. and the damage would be repaired before December. when skin-drying opeiatiuns would lie most needed. A returned Maori Balta lion man, Mr. Roliert Ilnniniiind, working at the far end of tlie plant, felt uimeeustomed heat and saw smoke. He immediately rang the alarm. Twenty-one members of the company’s fire brigade played a prominent part in suppressing the lire.
