ANNUAL GIFT TEA

Opened By Lady Shirtcliffe

A large number of friends and wellwishers attended the annual gift tea at the Levin Memorial Home in Wellington yesterday afternoon, which was opened by Lady Shirtcliffe. Mell laden stalls did excellent business and many gifts were received. The children gave items, and jams, cakes, biscuits and sewing, the girls’ work, were on view. Mrs. O. N. Gillespie, president of the committee, presided. Lady Shirtcliffe referred to the line work being done by the matron and staff in giving the children under their care a true Christian upbringing. A Christian outlook and way of living were going to be the vital things on which the new world order would be built after the peace. In fighting Germany, Italy and Japan, we were fighting not enemies alone, but dishonesty, disloyalty and cruelty as well. , ~ r Mrs. Gillespie spoke of the death ol the Rev. Mr. Tooley, and of the loss the home had suffered through the resignation of Miss Richardson, the former matron. She welcomed the Rev. T. E. Fagg and Mrs. Fagg, and the new matron, Mrs. I. Knowles. Special guests included Mrs. P. Fraser, wife of the Prime Minister. Mrs. H. St. B. Holland, Rev. Mr. McArthur and Mrs. McArthur, Rev. J. S. Young and Mrs. Young, Mrs. Elliott,' Mrs. Cross, Mrs. McWhannell, Mrs. A. Hunt, and Mrs. Chisholm, a helper of many years’ stand--lUltems by the girls included a demonstration of bandaging and hospital bedmaking, folk dances and songs. Afternoon tea was served. Mrs. Steptoe trained the girls in St. John Ambulance work, and Mrs. du Pout and Miss Arlow in singing. . . . Stall-holders were: iancy, Mrs. 1. de B Brandon, Mrs. Gofton; sweets, Mrs. C. Levin; produce, Mrs. Ayling, Musses Levin and Turton; cakes, Mesdames lb. Luke. Johansen. F. Longmore, Perkni, Lyon; flowers. Mesdames du Pont, Mair, Holdsworth, Macmorran, Miss Arlow.

St. Stephen’s Women’s Association. The October meeting of the St. Stephen’s Women’s Association, held at the church hall, Lower Hutt, recently, was presided over by Miss Ethel Steele. The meeting took the form of a cake afternoon. Mrs. Culley gave a talk on cooking problems. Pianoforte duets by Mrs. L. V. Bibby and Miss Lopdell were appreciated. % • ■
