OBITUARY

Mr. William Purvis

By the death on Monday morning of •Mr. William Purvis at the age Of 92 years, the Hastings district has lost one of its best-known and most esteemed settlers. When the Frimley Estate' was cut up for close settlement, Mr. Purvis, who was for many years employed by the late J. N. Williams, took up a fair-sized block for orchard purposes. He was also manager of the Frimley orchard for a number of years. He was greatly interested in civic affairs and ‘also in 1 the Hawke s Bay A. aud P. show, at which he was for some years an exhibitor. His wife predeceased him some years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. Wilkinson, Wellington and Mrs. W. E. Northe, Havelock Road, Napier. I ~ r ~ " Lady Hall-Jones The death occurred last evening of Lady Hall-Jones, widow of Sir William Hall-Jones, who was prominent m the political life of New Zealand for many years occupying the Timaru seat, holding the portfolios of Public Works and Marine in the Seddon Ministry, and being New Zealand High Commissioner in London from 1908 to 1912. He was a member of the Legislative Council when he died six years ago. Lady Hall-Jones was Miss Rosalind Lucy Purss, and was born in England 34 years ago. They married in 1875, a year after Sir William’s arrival, in New Zealand from Englund. Their family consists of Mr. F. G. Hull-Jones, barrister, of Invercargill, and Governor of Rotary; Mr. W. Hall-Jones, Hamilton, an engineer of the Public Works Department; Mrs. E. A. Christie, Wellington; Mrs. W. Brown, Wellington; and Miss H. Hall-Jones, Wellington. n Since her husband's death Lady HallJones had lived quietly at her residence in Burnell Avenue, and had been an invalid for some time. The funeral will be private. ~ ,
