Dominion Special Service
AUCKLAND, October 13. The Court would have to inflict a penalty whose effect would be implicit oliedieiicc of tlie price orders, said Mr, Levien, S.M., iu the Magistrates Court, Auckland, when B. S. Chong, a Chinese, pleaded guiltr to selling two pounds ot potatoes for 7d„ at a time when the order fixed tlie price at 2d. a pound. It was necessary to impose a penalty that wonlu make it not worthwhile tor anybody intending to sidestep the regulations. , Fining Chong £2O, Mr. Levien said the penalty might seem out of proportion to the price of the ‘ commodity, but when taken over weeks of such selling, it was not. The fine was only one-fifth of the maximum penalty, and it was likely t j at in future it would increase till it reached the maximum of £lOO. Fong Kee. another Chinese, was charged witli having sold to an inspector carrots, parsnips, and potatoes at prici's in excess of the order at the time. Hr was fined £2O in respect of the sale of the potatoes, and £lO for the sale of the carrots.
