Australian Referendum. The referendum at which the Commonwealth Government will seek, postwar powers will contain a provision to make the uniform taxation a permanent feature of the Australian system. The Attorney-General, Dr. 11. V. Evatt. has hinted at a uniform taxation plan
“Lidice Shall Live.” The President of Czechoslovakia, Dr, Benes, and the president of the Mineworkers’ Federation, Mr. Lawther, were among the speakers at a meeting in the Staffordshire town of Hanley, officially inaugurating a movement entitled “Lidice shall live.” The movement aims to raise £l.000,000 to rebuild the Czech village of Lidice which was razed by the Nazis.
Von Crannn Wounded? Mr. Walter Pate, captain of the last United States Davis Cup team, said that he was reliably informed that Baron Gottfried von Cramm was recently wounded in action and had lost both feet. Volt Cramm, the former German champion, and three times singles finalist at Wimbledon, was the mainstay of Germany's Davis Cup team in 1035-3 S.
