Old Age Pensions
Sir, —At a time like this, with our. country short of man and woman power, surely it would be wise to relax, in some measure, one of the conditions under which an old-age pension is granted. That condition practically prohibits a pensioner from earning more than'£s2 in any one year, as any earnings over that figure are deducted from his or her benefit.
No doubt, such a provision was suitable in. peace time, but common sense suggests that it should be modified in wartime. If the. minimum earnings allowed were increased to £lO4 a year for the duration of the war and for 12 months thereafter, the country would surely derive some benefit from the change.—l am, etc.. COMMONSENSE. Wellington, September 7.
