Completion Delayed ‘By
War Work
Between 400 and 500 State house units have been delayed in completion because of defence work and factors arising out of the war. The houses are in varying stages of construction, from foundation to finishing work. . There is still a great demand tor houses, however, particularly in Wellington and Auckland. The latest housing figures show that of the -W applications for houses from the whole of New Zealand, no fewer than 17,500 are from Wellington and Auckland. The possibility of steps being taken to retain South Island men in the building trade in the North Island tor I a period after the completion ot defence works on which they tire now angaged was indicated in a statement made recently by the Minister of Housing, Mr. Armstrong. Speaking in Christchurch, the Minister said that when thev had finished with defence work these South Island men would be needed for housing construction in Wellington and Auckland. State houses occupied in Wellington and suburbs number 2600.
