Employment Estimates For

Women Workers In U.S.A.

More than 13,000,000 American women, representing more than onefourth of total employment, are now engaged on war production, according to a report issued last month in Washington by Miss Mary Anderson, director of the Women’s Bureau, Department of Labour. She stated that 2,000,000 more women will be needed by the end of this year, and at least 5,000,000 more women than are at present employed will be needed by the end of 19-13. The absorption of women in aircraft assembly plants has increased tenfold since Pearl Harbour, and. women workers are also being rapidly recruited for jobs in aeroplane engine plants. "Construction of new plants and additions to others have raised peak employment estimates in the aircraft industries to 2,000,000 men and women by January, 1944. In a few months most of these will have to be women,” advises Miss Anderson. Of the nearly 30,000 women enrolled in pre-eui-ployment and supplementary defence training courses in April, practically 40 per cent, were reported in aviation services. At the same time 13,230 other women were enrolled in engineering, scientific and management defence training courses. Approximately 40 per cent, were studying production supervision, and nearly 30 per cent, general engineering. It is estimated that, more than 200,000 women will be working in ammunition factories by the end of this year.
