ABANDONED CARS

Official Action Likely

The prospect of official action being taken to deal with the problem of abandoned motor-cars in the streets was mentioned yesterday by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Semple. He stated that his attention had been drawn to remarks by the chief truffle inspector of the Wellington City Council on the need for something being done to deal with the many motor-cars which, because of their age and the difficulties in regard to supplies of petrol and tyres, -were being abandoned by their owners on the streets. “This problem was considered by me some years ago,” stated the Minister, “but at that time I was not convinced that the rather drastic legislation necessary to deal with the matter was justified; Some weeks ago, however, the matter was again brought before my notice by the city authorities, and I now consider that the war conditions have made the position so acute that emergency regulations should be used td deal with the problem. On my instructions suitable regulations are at present being drafted for the Government’s consideration. It is expected that they will permit a local authority to take possession of an abandoned motor-vehicle after giving the owner opportunity to remove it off the streets when the owner can be found.”
