Adjustments By Tribunal
Adjustments in the prices of various lines of vegetables are made in a price order issued yesterday. Last month the Price Tribunal announced it bad subjected certain vegetables to the operation of “ceiling” wholesale and retail prices, and that the period during which these prices would operate would be determined by the circumstances of the spring marketing of vegetables. Pumpkins are now increased from 4d. to 5(1. lb., and kumeras from sj(l. to Gd. Prices in respect of “main crop” carrots remain as before, but the wholesale prices of spring carrots (sown after February 20) are: North. Island, 27/- cwt.; elsewhere, 24/- cwt.; retail, 4£d. and 4d. a lb. respectively. The new price order fixes the following maximum wholesale and retail prices for the North Island main crops: Swedes, wholesale, 12/cwt.. retail 2d. lb.; turnips, 12/- and 2d.; carrots, 21/- and old.; parsnips, 21/- and 3Jd.; pumpkins, 30/- and 5d.; kumeras, 30/- and 6d.; "spring” carrots, 27/- and 41d. Vegetables elsewhere than North Island, except pumpkins and kumeras, aro 3/- cwt. and id; lb. lower. The tribunal emphasizes its desire to secure the full co-operation of all concerned, so as to facilitate the smooth working of the arrangement and the routine activities of the tribunal's inspectors. The\ Price Tribunal has also fixed the maximum retail price for onions, harvested up to November 1 next, at Gd. This price is to be uniform throughout New Zealand, Prices to growers are fixed at £3l in the South Island and £32 10/- in the North Island, sacks in. on trucks.
