OBITUARY

Mr. J. Vigor Brown

Mr. J. Vigor Brown, who had been closely identified with public, affairs in Napier over a long period, died yesterday morning, aged 88 years, says a ial Service telegram from Napier. He represented Napier 'in Parliament from 1908 to 1922 and for 18 years, with two intervals, held the office- of mayor of Napier. Mr. Brown, a Scotsman by birth, was educated at the Church of England Grammar School, Melbourne, and served his apprenticeshiji in the wholesale clothing trade with Sargood, Son & Ewem Melbourne, and went to Napier, in 18 <7 as district manager of Archibald Clark and Sons, Ltd., a position he held for -0 years, being later identified with a number of other companies. Mr. Brown was always a powerful advocate of progress. During his term of office the large, area of reclaimed land now known as Napier South was cut up for subdivision and sold for residential purjioses by the Napier Harbour Board. He was for a number of years a member of the Harbour Board, almost continuously from 1908 to 1932 and was for several years chairman. He had held the office of president of the Nil pier Chamber of Commerce, had lieen a member of (he High School Board of Governors, president of the Hawkes Bay Caledonian Society, chairman of the Napier Land and Building Investment Society, president and honorary treasurer of the Napier Park Racing Club, a member of the Hawke’s Bay Hunt. Club, commodore of the Napier Yacht Club and patron and supporter of almost every sports' body in the town. He. retired from active business some years ago. His wife predeceased him some years ago and he 1 is survived by two sons, Mr. A. B. Brown and Lieutenant C. V. Brown, Napier, and three daughters. Mrs. A. A. Cornford and Miss E. B. Brown, Napier, and Miss E. K. Brown, Sydney.
