MERCHANT SEAMEN

Claim For Death Duties Exemption

“The same torpedo could kill a merchant seaman and a soldier,” stated a member of the Dominion, executive committee of the N.Z.R.S.A. when drawing attention to the fact that the seamen’s estate would ’be liable to death duties while that of the soldier would be exempt. The committee was considering the reply of the Minister of Stamp Duties to the association’s representations that in cases where a merchant seaman died as a result of enemy action the estate should be exempt from death duties. Tho association’s contention was, in view of the fact that estates of deceased members of the naval, military and air forces are exempt from estate duty, that it was only-fair and reasonable that the estates of merchant seameii whose death occurred through enemy action should also be exempt. The Minister’s reply stated that the association’s _ representations would receive the consideration of the Government whenever the question of extending the present exemptions was under review.
