UNREST IN FRANCE

Quislings’ “Marseillaise”

(Received August 28, 9.40 p.m.) LONDON, August 28.

A message from Vichy, quoting the “Petit Parisien,” says that the last of the Jews of foreign nationality who have entered France since 1936, were rounded up in the unoccupied zone today for deportation to eastern Europe. The occupation authorities have ordered mayors to erase the names-of all Jews from the civil register, thereby depriving them of ordinary civil rights. Lyons radio announced that for the first time since the armistice the Tricolour flew from the dome of the Invalides in Paris, on the departure of the first French volunteers for the Russian front. A tricolour standard was presented to the battalion; and the “Marseillaise” was played. Admiral Darlan, Count de Brinon. and Herr Abetz wore present.

Reports reaching Berne from Paris indicate that the unrest is continuing. The latest incident occurred last night when a bomb exploded during a meeting of a collaborationist movement, the Reassemblement Populaire, killing one ami injuring many.
